Although it was a chilly morning for spectators at Wascana Lake in Regina, conditions were good for racing as the second day of heats got underway at the 1000-metre course.
Ontario had a great morning with six boats advancing to the finals, BC advanced in three events, Quebec took two races and Nova Scotia had one win today.
In the lightweight women's double, British Columbia took heat one in 3:52.72. Ontario's Susanne Ross and Connie Dayboll, both of Kingston, Ont., won heat two in 3:51.08. Dayboll recently won four medals at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and Ross took home five medals from the same regatta earlier this month.
Ontario won heat one of the men's double event in 3:22.87, and Quebec dominated heat two, finishing in a time of 3:26.41 over 1000 metres to advance to Friday's finals.
The men's four event again saw Ontario win in heat one, and British Columbia in heat two. BC's boat had Under-23 World bronze medalists (men's eight) Christopher Aylard of Sidney and Blake Pucsek of Victoria in its boat.
Again Nova Scotia's coach Bob Sawler watched as his granddaughter Ashley Mumford helped that provinces women's four win heat one in 3:45.57. Mumford also advanced in the womens pair yesterday. Ontario took heat two of the womens four event in 3:41.84.
In the women's double, Quebec won heat one, and Ontario was first in heat two. Ontario crew member Alex Shishkov of Mississauga was recently a member of the Canadian Junior team that competed at the World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany.
British Columbia, again with Under-23 team members Aylard and Pucsek in the boat, dominated its heat in the men's eight event, finishing almost eight seconds ahead of Alberta. Ontario won the second heat in 3:08.85, 10 seconds in front of New Brunswick. Ontario's cox Mark Laidlaw of Mississauga, who helped guide the Canadian Under-23 boat to a medal this year, will face fellow U23 team members now rowing for BC in Friday's final.
Those boats that did not advance this morning will have another chance this afternoon in the repechage races.
